Okay so I see Kirstie's adorable new page called Funny Face and she thanks Joscie for showing her how to do the outline - which is on her First Day of Preschool page. (see below)
Okay -- so how do you do those cool outlines?

Check out the pictures that go along with the tut, and you'll see how to make the elliptical tool subtract from the shape (it's in all of the options you can click on). I didn't see that at first either and was very confused, but it all makes sense now!

When you chose the elliptical tool, up at the top there are little sympols (ok so have no idea what that area is called, LOL)a square, 2 squares, 2 squares but one only an outline, and so on..... click the third one in(the one with two squares but one only an outline).. and that will change it to subtract where ever you place the cirlce.
I'm having trouble when it comes to adding to it... when I do an cntl+G, I don't get the outline.. I'm now thinking I have no idea how to do a clipping mask!

Ctrl + Click on the thumbnail and it selects the shape.

do you see the triangle next to the ellipse shape on the top tool bar? click that and the flyout menu will display.

ok so bear with me here.
i make my filled rectangle. i create a "new shape layer" (like it shows in the pics) i go to my elliptical tool (no ellipse tool, im assuming they are they same, also, i get no option to make it a circle like it shows in the pictures). i click on the "subtract from section" option. i make my circle, let go of the mouse and nothing happens. all i have is the outline of the circle.
im starting to think that this is "beyond" me. lol2 i still have a lot to learn.

when i click on that, i only get the option for an oval or rectangle. i dont get what shows in the tut and it looks like youre using pse6 too....
argh!
i swear im really not this dense! lol2

i still see no ellipse tool. :loco:

okaaaaaaaaaaaaay. found the ELLIPSE tool. totally different from the ELLIPTICAL tool! lol2
so now im stuck here:
Then I create a new layer above the shape. With the new layer selected, CTRL-Click on the shape thumbnail to create a selection around the shape on the new layer.
joscie, if you put up with me on this ill be your best friend forever and ever!

Okay to after you create your rectangle shape, you are going to stay on the same layer and just choose the ellipse tool: (red arrow)
http://www.cutchens.com/images/ellipsetool.jpg
to change the ellipse tool to a circle, you will click on the triangle to the right of the ellipse picture, not the one on the left. (blue arrow)

What's your issue with the next step? When she says to CTRL+click on the thumbnail, she means the actual thumbnail of the layer in the layers palette.
ETA: Okay, yay!! You figured it out! :)

so now hubs and i are both stuck here:

i add my paper, clip it like i would anything else, and the outline dissapears. lol2

Audra, did you make the outline on it's OWN LAYER? or is it grouped with the shape? You should have a layer for your shape and a layer for your outline. Place the paper BETWEEN those two layers and clip to the shape below it.

it's grouped with the shape(s) but when following everything step by step or so i thought, thats how everything ended up.
how do i make the outline it's own layer? this makes sense to me, i guess i just dont understand how to get there

I'm still stuck with the outline dissapearing too.
I think I'm messing up when I make my outline... but not sure how. So gonna go try again.
Sorry about the mess up with the ellipse tool and the Elliptical tool, I so didn't even look.. I had finally figured out how to get it to subtract and was like "HEy I can actually help!" LOL Totally jumped the gun...

hehe... you are too funny! Okay, girl... I hope I can explain this clearly. Once you get to this step:
8. Then I create a new layer above the shape. With the new layer selected, CTRL-Click on the shape thumbnail to create a selection around the shape on the new layer.
To create a new layer you can either hit SHIFT+CTRL+N or click the new layer icon in the layers pallette. THen with that new, trasparent layer selected, CTRL+Click on the thumnail of the layer BELOW it in the layers palette and proceed from there.
Let me know if you get it. ;)

OH my Gosh!!! Sooo... I went and started deleting all my layers so that I could start over, and there sits the outline all by itself.. Somehow its lifting off the white background layer!! I have no idea how I did this! ROFLMAO!!! I am not kidding you, I am Laughing my butt off over here!

Thanks for the step by step instructions. I have actually done this once and I did it using text -- but I misplaced my directions. So seeing your tut made me have my a-ha moment and say that's it!! I hope to play around with this soon.
Audra -- I really hope you get this girl!!! You are working so hard. I believe you just needed to make a new layer before you did the outline and stroke part.

I thought the instructions for PSE were pretty much the same for Photoshop. If nobody else has helped you by tonight or tomorrow I will see what I can do. I will not be at my own computer for most of the day so I can answer some questions for you or possibly tomorrow I can spell out the instructions for photoshop if you haven't received help by then.

Okay, I've played around with it again to refresh where I got lost and guess what? It worked. I'm not lost anymore. I don't even know where I got lost to begin with.
One question... what is simplify? Is it an important step? I don't see where I can do that in PS CS2 anywhere.
Krystal
marylee
10-14-2008, 08:46 PM
I'm thinking that "simplify when done" could be the same thing as "rasterize layer." If you right click on the layer in your layers pallet you will see a menu drop down and you choose the "rasterize layer" option.
I'm not exactly sure the technical side of why you'd do this. I only know that my DH who is a graphic designer for his job has told me to do this before. Something to do with bitmap/vector images.
This would just be my guess...anyone else have a better idea?
