In other words: What brings home the bacon?
This is yet another get-to-know-you thread to see what people do as a job/profession/career. Most LOs feature family, vacations, wedding, memories, but very few feature something like what your "job" is. I usually find on many forums that some people have VERY interesting jobs, so I'm curious to know: What's yours?
I'm a proofreader and have been doing it for over eight years. The last year and a half has been a little unstable in the job department, and as some of you know I recently lost my job. However, I have a found a new job and will start in a couple of weeks. I also have an interview lined up for tomorrow at another place which is much better than the other place, but at least I have something for now.
Once I'm a little settled into whichever job, I'm going to try and get into proofreading books, as I love to read and I hear it pays decently. But I'm just in the beginning brainstorming stages of that idea. Eventually I would love to do that "full time" and work for myself and from home.
It's not glamorous, but someone has to do it. Yes, I notice misspellings and grammar errors all over the place. That being said, I TOO make mistakes -- especially in forums.
SO, now your turn! ^_^

I love these kinda threads!! Good luck on the interview Gabby. We need a fingers crossed smilie :).
My DH makes the money, but I figure we are a team. He supports us financially and I support us in the everything else department. So having said that, I consider us to both be a team. However I think my fabulous CTs also help (thanks MM), and hopefully I am helping them bring home some bacon .

Well, I have a degree in Math Education so I could teach math, but I stay at home with my kids... and I hope I never have to teach. If so, I'll either tutor instead or try to get a job at an elem school. Middle and High school are not for me!
My hubby is definitely the one who brings home the bacon! He's a structural engineer. Poor guy has been studying every day and night for the test to get his license. blah!
Fortunately, I am very careful with money and don't spend a lot at ALL. I get most of what I need from my creative teams and probably don't even spend $10/month. But that also depends on sales here... and a few other places. :)
ETA: Gabby, I just noticed you're in Dallas! I live in Fort Worth but grew up just north of Dallas in Allen!

Please pray for our missing Texan CT member Tay. Poor girl still has no power.

Cool, ladies!! I'm really close to Plano right now, but this weekend we're moving to Carrollton (a little cheaper to save some money). My DH and I were going to buy a house in The Colony, but life happened and it didn't work out.
Wonder who else is in the DFW area????? ^_^

Good Luck Gabby. Hey, maybe you would know how to do this. I'm an artist, I can draw pretty well and I went to school for it. I have been trying to figure out how to be a childrens book illustrator? It seems to be one of those secretive things to get into.
Right now i'm a SAHM. I'm always trying to think of ways to be at home and make some money. I'm not very organized so I would really have to buckle down if I ever really did anything from home. I've done commissioned paintings and didn't really like that.
Obviously my hubby is the money maker. He is an Engineer and Division manager for Industrial Fire Sprinklers. He sells, and is in charge of fire sprinklers for Ethenol plants and those types of buildings.
I don't buy many digi things because i'm on some wonderful CT's. Thanks Miss Mint!!!

GOod luck with the interview!
DH and I are both students, but we work from home as apartment managers. It can be a really frustrating job, but it's good for us financially compared to DH's last job. I was all lined up for a job designing photography albums... but ummmm.... I really don't know what happened with that. It would be fun to do that some more.

I start in a few weeks for the second time as an administrative/copy clerk & post-session proofreader for the state of Indiana's Legislative Services Agency.
There are three departments within LSA, and I work for the Office of Code Revision. Once a lawyer has drafted a piece of legislation, i.e. bill, motion, amendment, resolution, etc., it comes over to the OCR office to be proofread, edited, and checked over by another lawyer. I'm at the very end of the line in that I make the copies for each piece, assemble the bill packets, and then deliver it by hand across the street. For example, if it's a Senate Bill, it will need X amount of copies which will need to be stacked in a very particular order and then so many copies go to the drafter and a copy goes to the Doghouse for the congressman's assistant to pick up. These have to be logged in by date and name and bill # in the appropriate places and then filed. In addition, other pieces in transition of the process need to be picked up there and brought back to OCR as well as any general errands run and/or miscellaneous things picked up from offices all over the Statehouse.
It's cool that I handle every piece of legislation that is worked on during the legislative session and it pays very well, but there is lots of downtime, especially before session actually starts in January, so there are hours and hours of just sitting around doing nothing. Once session starts, there are 10 hour days and mandatory every other Sunday afternoon shifts, but since I was just a temp, I didn't have to work until midnight like many of the regulars do.
I've tried desperately over the summer to get a FT job, but it's been impossible. I have an English degree, but no experience really doing anything, so I get looked over for admin jobs as they'll have to pay me more than someone else, but I can't get a more intermediate English/marketing-related job because I have no experience. Sigh. I can't think of anything more frustrating and dejecting than receiving 50 rejection letters over the span of 3 months.
Anyways, now that Jeff asked me to marry him, we're going to use what I make to pay for the wedding next year and his salary to pay for our living expenses. He will be finishing up his M.B.A. this May and hopes to have a new much better paying job after that, so hopefully, paying off the rest of the vendors in those last couple months before the wedding won't be an issue.
*lol* Aren't you sorry you asked now??

Cool thread! I'm always so blown away by people's jobs. I don't know why I always expect that scrappers/designers would be a in creative field but SO many are in science, math and technical fields. So interesting!!

Thanks to my wonderful CT's (gracias Miss Mint!), I don't shop for digi goods as much as I used to. I'm sure the hubby appreciates this since I am a SAHM. lol When I started digi, I had already had my daughter and quit my job in the mortgage industry. So, hubby basically paid for whatever I bought or I would pay for it from my eBay sales. My CT's now keep me so busy that I don't really have much time to scrap with other goodies although I do shop sometimes. It just takes me a looong time to use the stuff I buy.

I'm a first grade teacher.. I'm on my 6th week of maternity leave (I took all 12 weeks :happydance: ) I have been teaching for 10 years. I'm also a fellow Texan.. We have two boys.. DS#1 is almost 3.5 and acts like it. DS#2 turned 7 weeks yesterday. I am learning how to nurse and scrap/blog/chat with one hand. My husband is impressed how I can multi-task in front of the computer
Glad to meet ya'll!! ::hi::

I hear ya.... doing that with my 5 week old... that's why I post at all hours of the night!
I am a SAHM of two boys (please help me!)... and an Army wife!
Worked in the theme park entertainment field for a very long time- performing, operations, and guest relations. Was a professional ballet dancer when I was in my teens and skinny!
I am trained as a crime analyst (grad school) and worked for a state law enforcement agency as an investigative analyst.
I also worked as a recruitment and technology support coordinator for federal research studies in the area of substance abuse treatment. I recruited and trained treatment facilities for a large nationwide study, developed the training materials, and tested software that was to be rolled out, and basically helped get things going.
If I do go back to work, it will be when the kids go to school... and part time somehow.
We'll see!
LOL! Love the thread topic! Sorry I'm a little late. I'm in Houston and hurricane Ike knocked our power out for 12 days - just got it back yesterday afternoon. I have soooo much housecleaning to do and I'm on here. Priorities! LOL!
I own a teensy little jewelry dot com and have a large local clientele that I sell handmade jewelry to. It is a small but steady amount that gives me plenty of fun money to play with! Oddly enough, I spend most of it on REAL scrap supplies so I can do hybrid stuff. I spend $5-$10 per month on other scrap sites. Sad, huh? Oh well, when you get such GORGEOUS stuff to play with, why go anywhere else? I just want to hybrid!
Let me tell you about how much trouble I was in for finishing a hybrid sign (not yet in the gallery) while the news people droned on about the hurricane heading for us. Once the project was done I began packing us up to evacuate. Not before. Hubby thought I had issues! LOL! lol

The title of this thread made me laugh!
What pays for my addiction(s)? Well mainly DH I guess, seeing as though I don't get paid very much for my job(s).
I am an in-home child care provider and look after one little girl 3 days/week. So yah...that pays about, oh, $3/hour? hehe But it's soooooo worth it and I love her to pieces!
I also am a PartyLite consultant and do shows a couple of times per month. The money that I make from this (which is pretty decent), pays for my Early Childhood Education courses that I am taking through distance education.
So that's about it for me....

I am a trained cosmetologist, but I'm not workin. Nor have I since getting my license! lol I thought I'd go to work but I just couldn't part with my son and DH didn't want him being raised by daycare so we could have a few extra hundred bucks a month. I do stuff from home though. I sell cupcakes and hairbows, and I custom make clothes for little girls. I'm def a crafty little freak!
DH is in the Navy. He's actually getting ready to go over to Bahrain for 18 months, and thats gonna suck! But it is why I started getting more interested in digital scrappin. I wanted to create a book for him to take with him that isn't big and bulky, so here I am!

Well honestly I don't buy much stuff. I would love to I just don't get a lot of extra money to play with. My CT's keep me busy and well supplied with stuff.
When I do buy stuff it is usually with credits for completing challenges or contests. Or sometime my sweet digi friends RAK me (I still owe ya Christy).
I work at Babies R Us one to two days a week and I get enough to pay my utilities and not have to put my kids in daycare because I only work when my sig other has off.

Well, I'm a SAHM to two little boys, but looking into some opportunities to bring in a little extra. I'd love to start doing more crafting and selling on etsy or something like that. I used to work in retail (yuk) but quit as soon as DH graduated and finally got a real job! He is a dentist and takes good care of us, although the studnet loans are a bear! I'm well taken care of in the digi department thanks to a good friend who started her own digi company and is very generous, plus I'm on one CT.

Well I went to school for Business Marketing and graduated last year. I haven't really worked in the field that I would like which is public relations and advertising which makes me sad but then again where I am living right now I am lucky at all that I have a job..LOL not alot of selection.
I had a contract researching hate crimes and developing a program empowering aboriginal women and their families. Which was very intense and rewarding. I just started another contract at a different organization coordination and entrepreneurial job shadowing project that increases leadership, networking and business skills in aboriginal youth.
I also do some freelance graphic design work with my partner for a local multimedia company.
I would LOVE to have my own business one day doing photography and design work.
Mostly I try and be frugal when purchasing my scrap stuff. I am currently tying to start up my own website designing and would LOVE to get on a CT.

Currently I work and go to school. DH and I are both graduating this year, I'll have my BS in Mechanical Engineering and he'll have his in Optical Engineering. If I seem crazy, it's because school itself (not including homework) keeps me busy for 21 hours/week (even though it's only 13 credit hours) and on top of that is the homework/Senior Capstone Project.
Added to that I work at least 12 hours a week. I work for an engineering firm in the mining division where I am a piper. I actually got to go to my first mine a couple weeks ago! It was awesome to finally see all of the equipment I've been drawing up on AutoCAD, and see what pipes and pumps and tanks and valves all look like up close! The guys made fun of me for taking so many pictures, and I wish I got more of myself being there so that I could scrap some that would be more interesting than just "This is NOT what to do" which is what most of my pictures were.
I really like my job because the people I work with are great and I'm learning a LOT! As hard as it can be to work and go to school, I feel like work has helped me understand what's really important to learn in school.
Currently government grants and my job pay for my hobby. I have a small budget every month, but I also don't have much time right now (besides when I'm procrastinating...like I am right now). After graduation we plan to have kids and I'll stay at home while DH brings home the bacon. He loves that I scrap because I get so excited about it, so he fully supports it! In fact, he bought me a new computer AND PSE6 this summer even though I just started scrapping in May!

I too love these threads! It's so fun to see what everyone does for a 'living'. Me, I'm a SAHM. My dream job really. ;) I have 3 boys, the 2 oldest are in school all day and then I have a 3 year old that goes to school 2 times a week for preschool (just 2 hours). So, I'm getting a little taste of alone time for the first time in 9 years. It's kind of nice...but we'd like to adopt a girl. We'll see...
So, my hubby pays for my addiction...and I've been buying too much lately. I need to stop! lol2 No, seriously! :blowkiss: Somone's been playing with the Smilies...Miss Mint? LOL! lmao Okay, that's gross!

I work for the Dutch government, kind of like the IRS. I coordinate a group of 6 people who handle international request for information. A very interesting job wich I like. My planning skills come in handy, my creativity is not used at all. That's the one thing I don't like about my job...
My DH is an IT-consultant.
My DS and DD are at daycare 3 days a week and they really love it very much. One of my closest friends is a mentor there, also very comforting... Always an extra eye on them.

I work from home part time (30 hrs/wk) for a small dotcom doing customer service and bookkeeping. My DH is a high school business/marketing teacher and basketball coach.
I would say that since I've been digi-scrapping in the fall of '06 I have probably spent less than $10/month on supplies and that includes PSE and my bound, 2007 book.

As far as what or who pays for my 'addiction'...it's not work, nor my dh's work...I truly and humbly appreciate my site CT and CTs I'm currently with..without designers like them, I would be still fetchin' the freebies on blogs and such. he only gets paid once a month which SUCKS  which is why if i can buy it's usually in the beginning of the month. i probably only spend 7-20 bucks a month at the MOST. some months it's 0 (sorry miss mint. lol!). i separate my kits into categories (buttons, tags, papers, etc.) after i use them for the first time. if i cant justify spending the money on a new kit, i just mix and match the stuff i have. it gets me by! lol
i havent been able to buy anything yet and it's killing me! :gah: is it october 1st yet?!

well my hubby pays for my addictions ... (photography/beading/scrapping and motorcycles!) thankfully... he's a mechanical engineer so brings home pretty dang fine $$$... does 4 on 3 off each week though the downside is that he has to work 12 hour shifts when he is working, it means that I can't work a normal job... but I am a photographer and as a bit of a sideline I do some family/newborn/kiddo shoots to bring in a little extra everynow and then... and I teach the odd class in photography or paper scrapping too... oh and I make one off beaded items and jewellery for sale too...
but other than that all my time is spent with the kiddos or helping out in some way in my community...
oh and of course my wonderful designers I CT for keep me busy and in scrap supplies for the most part... I do however every now and then have a big ole splurge on scrap supplies

Wow. And more wow. Y'all have some VERY exciting jobs/skills out there...and so many of you are SAHMs anyway! To be completely honest, I'm not cut out for being a SAHM. I get easily distracted by the computer and am terrible at keeping up with housework plus my kids don't get nearly enough attention that way!
I work full-time in public health as a program assistant. I often get to use my creativity there and am the resident geek for helping people with their computer issues, which I love. Hubby works his ass off at a tire shop. The two boys go to a sitter while I work Monday to Friday.
As for scrapping, I'm on two CTs...one for Christy Sturm who sells at her own shop (BSD) and at SSD. I'm also on the CT at NDISB so I rarely spend anything because there are so many fabulous designers there. All I have to do is go put something in the cart and the subtotal says 'zero'.:happydance:
So mostly I buy myself some minty goodness every month or two :) and splurge a little here and there when my digigalpals show me something cool! (Those nasty enablers!)
