Being outside is not only good for us, in terms of fresh air and soaking up a healthy amount of Vitamin D from the sun, it also opens up a whole new world in terms of photography. Since many of us have been cooped up all winter in our houses or at the office, I thought getting outside (hopefully in the sunshine) would not only be a nice change of pace and hopefully rid us of cabin fever but also spark some new creativity into our picture taking.

For this challenge, I'd like to see landscapes or nature shots. This usually means the frame is devoid of people or objects and the surrounding nature is the focus. However this isn't a hard and fast rule. I would challenge you to use those elements in a limited fashion and concentrate on the natural beauty around us.

A few tips to keep in mind when shooting outdoors:

*change your white balance. If it's sunny, change it accordingly. If it's cloudy, the same applies. This makes a huge difference in the tonal quality of the image.

*typically you'd want to utilize a wide angle for landscape photos.

*it can sometimes be helpful to use a polarizing or UV filter. If you don't have these it's not mandatory but helps keep the image from being “cloudy” or muddy in terms of tone.

*be sure to orient your camera according to the subject. If you're photographing trees, rotate your camera into portrait mode.

*composition and cropping are essential to getting a strong image.

*be aware of the light & shadows.

*think about what the best viewpoint or perspective for the shot would be.

*depending on your time of day, you may need a tripod for lower light situations.

*for landscape or nature photos you want a longer depth of field or a longer plane where the image is in focus. Ideally you'd want an apeture of 11 or higher to achieve this.

If you have any questions please feel free to post them or email me. I'm here to help.*

You have from*Friday Apr. 2nd*to*Thursday Apr. 15th*to shoot your photos for this theme. Below are some examples to get the creative juices flowing. Good luck and I look forward to seeing everyones photos!
